On Thursday December 12, 2013 at 4:30 pm a release party of DVD VIRVAR – Contemporary Slovak Animated Film is to be held at the movie theatre of the Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. The event is a part of Mini Fest Anča and the entrance is free. VIRVAR DVD is then going to be launched onto the Christmas market.
DVD VIRVAR presents to public 16 short films by post-revolutionary generation of Slovak animators. In spite of significant international success of many of the featured movies, Slovak audience has only had a chance to see a few of them so far. The collection is a result of mapping of last 16 years and selecting films with the strongest spectator and artistic potential.
The movies are featured on two DVDs sold in a set box, complemented with a rich, full-color booklet. The first disc entitled BIG VIRVAR is aimed at adult audience, and the second one, LITTLE VIRVAR contains films for children.
This collection represents the first editorial attempt to map the evolution of animation in Slovakia after 1989. The focus is mainly on the author base of students and graduates of the Department of Animation at the Academy of Performing Arts. Back in the 1990s when Slovak film production came to a stalemate and animated film virtually ceased to exist, it was this department that kept the production running and raised new director, artist and animator personalities.
On the two DVDs the viewers can find the most successful student films IN THE BOX (V KOCKE)(Michal Struss, 1999), nominated for the Student Oscar Academy Award and IF NOT, THEN NOT (KEĎ NIE, TAK NIE)(Vladimir Král, 1997), the first Slovak film to enter the Cannes Cinéfondation competition. Strong female lineage of authors is also included (Ivana Šebestová, Katarína Kerekesová, Michaela Čopíková, Veronika Obertová and Joanna Kožuch), as is the coming generation of creators for children (Vanda Raýmanová, Boris Šima). The DVD also includes a film by František Jurišič, a pedagogue of most of the young authors. Last, but not least, the selection features the currently very successful festival films LAST BUS (POSLEDNÝ AUTOBUS)(Martin Snopek, Ivana Laučíková, 2011) and PANDAS (PANDY)(Matúš Vizár, 2013).
VIRVAR DVD was produced by the production company feel me film with the financial support of the Audiovisual Fund. After December 12, 2013 the DVD will be available in Bratislava stores Artforum, Klapka (SFI shop and stall at the Christmas market), Ex Libris in the Slovak National Gallery, 82 bøok&design shõp.
