Summer’s here! Enjoy with children in our fairyland

How about celebrating the holiday season at the 10th Fest Anča international animation festival? Between 29 June and 2 July you can explore the fantastic worlds of the very best animated films. Stanica Žilina-Záriečie, the beautiful Puppet Theatre, and the Artforum bookshop will live and breathe fairyland. Open-air screenings will also take place at Andrej Hlinka Square thanks to TV in the City.

Our festival programme is bursting with fairy-tale magic – most popular is the international competition of animated films for children, where kids choose the winner in the cinema screening room from the newest international animated films that haven’t even been shown in cinemas or on TV yet! Non-competition films will be screened in the World Panorama for Kids.

Our 10th birthday party will include global hit family feature films screened for free as part of TV in the City at Andrej Hlinka Square in Žilina, such as Spirited Away – a ten-year old girl’s absorbing adventure. “This film – which won an Oscar, Golden Bear at Berlinale, and other awards – will inspire you to explore Hajao Mijazaki’s filmography,” says festival director Žofia Bosáková. “His films lead world cinema – inspiring Japanese animated films and anime.”

Another enchanting film is Kubo and the Two Strings. This animated epic from the American Laika studio takes you on a journey through ancient Japan, where Kubo has an extraordinary storytelling talent. He uses his gift to provide for himself and his sick mum: every day he goes to the local village to tell amazing stories. But he must finish and get home before sunset to avoid being cursed. Of course the day soon comes when Kubo runs late, and the adventure begins…

Follow your dream to the end of the world, states the subtitle of French animated film Long Way North. It tells the story of a girl from a 19th century family of Russian aristocrats – instead of getting married, brave Sasha flees to find her grandfather. He’s a distinguished scientist and polar explorer who has not returned from his expedition, and is feared dead. Sasha knows he’s still alive and won’t rest until she finds him, even if she must go to the North Pole.

Oscar-nominated The Red Turtle is a collaboration between Japanese production and Michaël Dudok de Wit, a London-based Dutchman, who won an Oscar for Father and Daughter. “This beautiful meditative film – which won the Un Certain Regard Special Prize in Cannes – “captivates with its visuals, soundtrack, and delicate emotions,” observes Žofia.

The Oddsockeaters are here to snatch one of your socks! Love Czech fairy-tales? Then you’ll love this selection of popular 1960s TV bedtime stories such as Little Beetles, Rumcajs, Robber, and Bedtime Stories, as well as the new Slovak TV bedtime story Tots.

“There will be even more fairy-tales this year, including popular Hungarian dialogue-free animated films for children. You can also enjoy our creative workshops and learn something new,” says Žofia.

Want to have fun and magic making your very own animated film? Sure you do! So check out the two-day Animation for the Youngest Tots workshop with Vanda Raýmanová – author of the successful Tots animated series. Parents will appreciate the Montessori playroom for children aged 1-3 at Stanica Žilina-Záriečie, which will show animated films for kids and parents.

The festival is financially supported by the Slovak Audiovisual Fund.
