From the late 1950s, Hungarian animation reflected the influence of contemporary Eastern European graphic arts, neo-avant-garde painting, Western European advertising graphics, and Polish posters and experimental films. György Kovásznai and Sándor Reisenbüchler emerged with formally iconoclastic painting and collage animations that represented New Left thinking. The films of Péter Szoboszlay, which have strong social-critical implications, borrow from pop art and hippie-secession. Marcell Jankovics’s emblematic “fate-animations” are dense parables of the creative mind’s mission.
